Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg had fired the first salvo when he said that there are a lot of people in Meta who should not be in the company.
Bosses are never satisfied no matter how much you work and Google CEO Sundar Pichai is no different. Pichai has reportedly told his employees to focus more on productivity. He believes that the employees are not being productive enough. Pichai, unfortunately, is not the first CEO in the tech space to feel that his employees are not working hard enough. Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg had fired the first salvo when he said that there are a lot of people in Meta who should not be in the company.
“There are real concerns that our productivity as a whole is not where it needs to be for the head count we have.[We need to] create a culture that is more mission-focused, more focused on our products, more customer-focused. We should think about how we can minimize distractions and really raise the bar on both product excellence and productivity,” he told his employees. While Pichai subtly criticized his employees for bringing up productivity issues, Zuckerberg was unabashed.
“Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here. And part of my hope by raising expectations and having more aggressive goals, and just kind of turning up the heat a little bit, is that I think some of you might just say that this place isn’t for you. And that self-selection is okay with me,” Zuckerberg said during a QnA session.
On a related note, Google has recently informed employees about a hiring slowdown. He said, like all companies, Google is not immune to economic headwinds.
Pichai further said that such challenges should not be seen as obstacles. “Instead, we’ve seen them as opportunities to deepen our focus and invest for the long term," he said in the memo. He further added that Google will be slowing down hiring for the rest of the year because of the hiring progress the company has achieved so far.He also clarified that Google is not completely freezing hiring. Pichai said that the company would continue hiring for “engineering, technical and other critical roles, and make sure the great talent we do hire is aligned with our long-term priorities”.
