Ram Gopal Varma is a passionate filmmaker and is known for churning out back-to-back projects. The director is now gearing up for the release of his production venture, Dhahanam, which will stream on MX Player from April 14. Starring Vinod Anand, Isha Koppikar, Abhishek Duhan and Sayaji Shinde, the web series is based on a Naxallite movement in the South. Directed by Agasthya Manju, Dhahanam has story written by Ram Gopal Varma.
Ahead of the release of Dhahanam, Ram Gopal Varma spoke to IndiaToday.in about the series, how he put together a project about a Naxallite movement and Sushant Singh Rajput's death.
Excerpts from the interview:
Q: What was the inception of Dhahanam?
A: The story of Dhahanam happens in an interior part of Andhra Pradesh. We’ve been hearing about the story for about two decades - the kind of violence and lawlessness that happens there. When I met people from MX Player, I told them about this script. They were impressed with the story. The beauty of a web series is that you can take a lot more time fleshing out the characters and give the much-needed detailing. Secondly, the audience can get emotionally invested because they will get to know the characters for a longer time. This is not possible in a feature film.
Q: How was it writing the story for a web series? Is there any difference when it comes to writing for films?
A: The process is pretty much the same. For a film, you write an interval block, which creates curiosity for the second half. Similarly, each episode has the design of creating a high. It will be inbuilt into the screenplay.
