In the NEET PG 2022 case, Supreme Court has refused to interfere in the matter regarding internship deadline extension. SC said that this was a policy matter and that the court wouldn’t interfere with the right of the government.
It has however allowed petitioners to submit a representation to the union government requesting an extension of the May 31 deadline for internship completion. It has also asked that the issue be decided within a week of its submission.
The apex court was hearing the petitions filed regarding NEET PG 2022.
After completing their MBBS, doctors need to complete a mandatory one-year internship before they can appear for NEET PG for admission to PG medical courses in medical specialisation cases.
Due to the postponement of the final exams in many universities because of Covid-19, and because of Covid-19 duties, many of those interns wouldn’t be able to complete their internship till after the May 31 deadline.
But NEET PG 2022 is now scheduled for May 21 even after a six-to-eight-week postponement. If the internship competition deadline was not extended or an alternative not found, these doctors would lose a year.
Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for a few petitioners in this case said that the Covid-19 duties carried out by a few candidates got their internship periods postponed.
