The Madurai Corporation has bagged the third prize awarded by the Jal Shakti Ministry, Government of India, for its initiatives taken in water resource management.
Accompanied by Commissioner K. P. Karthikeyan, Mayor V. Indrani received the award at a function held in New Delhi on Tuesday from Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and other dignitaries. The ministry, which was formed in 2019 has been presenting awards since then to the best State, district and Corporations across the country.
A press release issued here on Wednesday stated that the Union government had ranked Tamil Nadu in the third place among the best State category.
Many districts and Corporations were also assessed by the expert teams under different categories. The objective of the ranking was to encourage stakeholders and the people to adopt holistic approach towards water resources management.

The Corporation had also carried out repairs on defunct borewells and brought them back to use.
The officials had also found ways to drain the rainwater logging in low lying areas in and around the Periyar bus stand, Arasaradi, Goripalayam and other locations. Similarly, it had also cleared encroachments in the rain water harvesting structures in many of the public and commercial buildings and paved way for enhancing the water table, the official added.
The Mayor said that she would continue to strive hard towards achieving the goals set and deliver potable water to all the habitations, introduce technology in solid waste management and also bring about transformation in garbage disposal in multi storeyed apartments.
