The family of a 22-year-old man have alleged that he died of police custodial torture in Kanyakumari. However, the police have denied the allegations and said that the man had consumed poison. The post-mortem report of the deceased is still awaited.
The victim, identified as Ajith, was out on conditional bail after he was arrested for assaulting his neighbour over an issue. On June 23, Ajith had gone to the Kulasekaram police station to sign the police register, a part of his routine for conditional bail. But he did not return home.
According to the police, on June 23, Ajith had gone to the police station. Police said the man had consumed poison and also took something out of a plastic cover and ate it.
"Seeing this, an ambulance was called. As there was a delay before the arrival of the ambulance, he was taken to Asaripallam Government Hospital in a private jeep. The incident was recorded on a surveillance camera outside the police station. Ajith died at 11:45 am on June 25 in the ICU," the police said.
The family of the man claimed that he had gone to the station to collect his phone. They alleged that Kulasekaram police had come to their house and forced them to sign a few papers and that Ajith's father was taken to Aasaaripallam hospital.
"Police said that their son had consumed poison and subsequently died in the hospital," the kin of the victim said.
Ajith's father, Sasikumar, claimed that the Kulasekaram police were responsible for their son's death.
