HMC urges citizens, residents to receive free flu vaccinations as soon as possible

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) doctors have warned that the flu virus can cause serious illness and lead to hospitalization and even death, noting that more than 500 people are admitted to Hamad Medical Corporation Hospitals each year due to the flu. Dr Muna al-Maslamani, medical director of the Communicable Disease Center (CDC) at Hamad Medical Corporation, said, "The flu is not just a bad cold its a serious illness. Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. More than 500 people are hospitalized in Qatar each year for flu and its complications and between eight and 12 patients die every year because of influenza." Dr al-Maslamani said the flu vaccine was being offered earlier this year so that members of the community can build immunity ahead of this years flu season. "We are already seeing a significant number of people presenting at medical facilities with the flu, we have decided to take a proactive approach and offer the vaccine earlier than usual," al-Maslamani said.More Related News
