Elon Musk says he prefers work in office but excellent Twitter employees can work from home

Elon Musk recently made return to office mandatory for all Tesla employees and that worried Twitter staff since he is their future boss. Musk, however, is seemingly going easy on Twitter employees, for now.
For the first time, Elon Musk met Twitter employees during a virtual meeting on Thursday. The Tesla CEO talked about layoffs, remote work culture, and several other changes he plans to bring once the Twitter deal is officially finalised later this year. As for the continuation of the remote working culture as set by Jack Dorsey, Musk said that Twitter employees doing "excellent" work can continue to work from home.
Musk recently made return to office mandatory for all Tesla employees and that worried Twitter staff since he is their future boss. The Tesla CEO, however, is seemingly going easy on Twitter employees, for now. During the internal meeting held on Thursday between Musk and Twitter employees, the billionaire said that people who are excellent at their job can continue to work from home. However, Musk did clarify that he prefers work from office setup and would confirm with managers if remote employees are contributing positively to the company.
“If someone can only work remotely, and they’re exceptional, it wouldn’t make sense to fire them,” Musk reportedly said in response to one of the questions related to return to office. “Definitely not in favor of things that are mad," Musk added, as revealed by someone who was part of the meeting.
Earlier this month, Musk sent an email to Tesla employees with the subject line "remote work is no longer acceptable". Musk clearly said that employees either return to office or lose their job.
In the same email, the billionaire said "anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla.” Musk also clarified that the office “must be a main Tesla office, not a remote branch office unrelated to the job duties, for example being responsible for Fremont factory human relations, but having your office be in another state.”
On the contrary, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey encouraged remote working culture. Back in 2022, Twitter announced that employees would have the option to work from home "indefinitely" if they choose to.
Additionally, during the same internal meeting, Musk hinted that layoffs are planned for the future. Musk said that the company “needs to get healthy” financially and also bring the cost down. He, however, assured that “anyone who is a signification contributor has nothing to worry about."
