Cyclone Fengal has caused significant disruption to air travel in southern India, leading to widespread flight delays and cancellations. Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) reported 20 flight cancellations and two diversions on Saturday (November 30, 2024), as adverse weather conditions persisted in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
According to authorities at GMR Hyderabad International Airport, the cancelled flights included 10 outbound and 10 inbound services. Among these, three flights from Hyderabad to Chennai were cancelled, along with their return flights from Chennai to Hyderabad. Similarly, seven flights between Hyderabad and Tirupati in both directions were also grounded.
The disruptions were caused due to the temporary suspension of operations at Chennai International Airport, which was announced as a precautionary measure. Chennai Airport issued a statement on X, saying, “In light of Cyclonic Storm ‘Fengal’ and the forecasted high crosswinds, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chennai Airport operations will be suspended from 12.30 p.m. to 7 p.m on Saturday (November 30), following safety concerns raised by stakeholder airlines. We recommend passengers check with their respective airlines regarding their flights.”
