Comprehensive de-addiction and rehabilitation centre inaugurated in Thoothukudi

Tamil Nadu CM inaugurates de-addiction centre in Thoothukudi hospital, part of state-wide initiative for substance abuse treatment.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday inaugurated the comprehensive de-addiction and rehabilitation centre at Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital through video conferencing.
As announced by the Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu during 2024-2025 budget, 25 de-addiction centres were established in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu to specifically cater to individuals affected by substance abuse related to alcohol, drugs and other psychotropic substances. These centres termed “Kalankarai” were inaugurated across 25 government hospitals in the State
In line with the initiative, a centre was inaugurated in Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital for the individuals struggling with addiction.
Following the inauguration, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan and District Collector K. Elambahavath participated in the event held at the hospital.
The Minister said, the newly inaugurated centre equipped with 20 beds will provide treatment to persons struggling with addictions, including providing treatments like medical detoxification and counselling services by professional psychologists.
She further explained the course of treatment stating, “The patients are required to have their family members by their side during the first week of intensive treatment. For the next three to four weeks during the rehabilitation measures, the presence of family is not mandatory.” She added that the centre offers a holistic treatment that includes, medication, counselling, recreational activities including games such as carrom, chess, yoga and wellness counselling.
