A Chennai woman died by suicide after she lost gold and her sisters’ money in online gambling.
A 29-year-old Chennai woman ended her life after she lost gold jewellery and Rs three lakh of her sisters’ money in online gambling. The woman has been identified as Bhavani, a resident of Pudhu Nagar. Her husband, Bakkiyaraj, works in a private firm and they have two sons.
On May 5, Bhavani told her husband that she was going to take a bath. As she hadn’t come out of the room for a longtime, Bakkiyaraj forced open the door and found Bhavani hanging from the ceiling. She was rushed to Stanley hospital but was declared brought dead.
An initial investigation revealed that Bhavani was addicted to online gambling for a year and had lost her savings. She had sold her gold jewellery weighing 160 gm, worth Rs 10 lakh and had borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh from her sister Bharathi, Rs 1.5 lakh from another sister Kavitha. She lost it all in online gambling.
According to police, four days ago, Bhavani confessed to her younger sister that she lost the money and promised not to play again.
