Police filed an FIR against Salim Qureshi, the brother-in-law of Dawood Ibrahim’s close aide Chhota Shakeel for forging documents to pay lower taxes on a property in Mumbai.
The Dadar police in Mumbai registered an FIR against nine people, including Salim Qureshi, the brother-in-law of Dawood Ibrahim’s close aide Chhota Shakeel, on Wednesday. The FIR was filed on the basis of a complaint that the nine people forged documents to pay lower taxes on a property in Mumbai.
Qureshi, who also goes by the name Salim Fruit, was earlier arrested by the National Investigative Agency (NIA) and is currently in NIA custody.
The forgery case against Qureshi was filed by Mohammad Rafique Tambe who owns a building in the Null Bazar area of South Mumbai. He told the police that Qureshi and the other accused in the case cheated the state exchequer by using forged documents on the sale of a property to pay lower taxes.

The matter came to Tambe’s notice when the tenants received notice from lawyers that they had to pay rent to Qureshi as he had bought fifty percent of the building. When Tambe went to check at the registrar’s office, he found that electricity bills of tenants, gumasta licences, fake tenant receipts and fake tenants' list and other documents used for registration of the said property were forged documents and did not belong to the tenants.
The documents were used to pay a lower duty or tax for registration purposes, which was much lower than the actual price of the property. Qureshi and the others duped the state exchequer and caused a loss of lakhs of rupees to the government using fake documents. According to Tambe, Salim Qureshi allegedly purchased fifty percent flats in the building for just Rs 21 lakh.
The Dadar police, based on the statement of Tambe verified the documents and found that the documents were forged and charges of forgery and criminal conspiracy were added against Salim Qureshi and eight others.
