Bellingham’s remarkable transformation from astute midfielder to prolific poacher: a tactical masterclass from Real Madrid’s Ancelotti Premium

Jude Bellingham has added goal-scoring to his already burgeoning quiver, becoming a star for Real Madrid with five goals in four La Liga games and one for England. His tactical switch to a diamond structure, with less defensive work and more offensive freedom, has seen his expected goal tally nearly double. His heading ability and wiry frame have been key to his success, as has his self-aware goal celebration.
There weren’t many better young midfielders in the world than Jude Bellingham even before he joined Real Madrid earlier this summer from Borussia Dortmund for a reported £115 million.
And then, the Englishman just went on to become even better, adding a new skill to his already burgeoning quiver – goal-scoring.
Before his miraculous streak at the start of this season – where he scored five goals in four La Liga games and once for England – the 20-year-old wasn’t a frequent visitor to the goalscoring column.
For Real Madrid, he has already scored almost half of what he scored for Borussia Dortmund (12 goals) in the Bundesliga in 92 appearances.
Bellingham’s Midas touch in front of goal is an output of a tactical switch by Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti – necessitated by a lack of resources at the club – and by an appreciation of the unexplored talents of the Englishman.
With Karim Benzema, who led the Los Blancos lines for a decade or so, leaving for treasure-laden pastures of the Saudi Pro League, Ancelotti was left without a No. 9 in his arsenal.
The Italian manager although did have Brazilian tricksters Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo, who have been regular scorers. But both of the young stars are better suited as wingers or as second strikers.
