For Star Wars fans across the world there was always hope. The tiniest spark of hope that they held onto and refused to let slip. The hope that maybe, just maybe (if the Force was really with them) would their long-awaited dream be made a reality. And when Lucasfilm’s President Kathleen Kennedy walked on stage at the D23 Expo in 2019 to announce the return of one of cinema’s most iconic characters, hope had indeed been rekindled.
There had always been a lot riding on this project. Since its alleged conception way back in 2015, with the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm, the project has always been kept extremely hush-hush, especially for the star of the show Ewan McGregor himself, according to whom, the information had to be kept secret for the entire four years.
But what is it about this singular character whose existence in the franchise has not seen the light of day since 2005 that has had fans so transfixed and obsessed? Why was the Obi-Wan project so important to the community?
