Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss on Thursday (February 27, 2025) slammed the Tamil Nadu government for failing to take steps to make Tamil a compulsory subject and the medium of instruction in schools across the State.
In a statement, he said to protect its mother tongue, the Telangana government had recently announced that learning Telugu would be made compulsory for students from Classes I to X in all schools in the State, affiliated to various boards.
Even after 19 years of enacting the Tamil Language Learning Act, 2006, which stipulated that learning Tamil was compulsory for students from Classes I to X in all the schools in Tamil Nadu, affiliated to various boards, the State government had not taken any measures to implement it, Dr. Anbumani alleged.
“Those who came to power by promising to promote Tamil have neither taken any measures to make Tamil a compulsory subject and medium of instruction in educational institutions nor to speed up the trial of pending cases in courts on this matter,” he added.
He urged the State government to take constructive measures in this regard.
