All cases filed across the country against Nupur Sharma for her comments about the Prophet Mohammed will be transferred to Delhi, the Supreme Court ordered on Wednesday, in a huge relief to the now-suspended BJP leader.
All the 10 cases filed across the country against Nupur Sharma for her comments about the Prophet Mohammed will be transferred to Delhi, the Supreme Court ordered today, in a huge relief to the now-suspended BJP leader.
The court was hearing an appeal by Sharma seeking the clubbing and transferring of the multiple FIRs against her in several states into one, which the Bengal government was opposing.
Although the matter was originally listed for hearing on August 10, it was not included in the court’s cause list last evening. An updated list was released this afternoon, listing the matter for hearing today.
The top court had earlier come down heavily on Sharma for her remarks against the Prophet Mohammed on a news channel, which later snowballed into a scathing global controversy. Massive protests were reported in India and in several other countries, with most condemning the comments. The protests also led to violence in several places.
The BJP was quick to distance itself from the controversy and Nupur Sharma was suspended from the party and from the post of its spokesperson.
