Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology (AIET), in association with the Institute of Industrial Nanomaterials, Kumamoto University, Japan, and BETA CAE Systems India Pvt. Ltd, Bengaluru, hosted a two-day international symposium on ‘Recent Advances in Materials Joining and Manufacturing Processes’ in Moodbidri recently.
Delivering the keynote address, Shuichi Torii, professor and former assistant director, Kumamoto University, emphasised the critical role of advanced materials joining technique in manufacturing technology. “Techniques like welding, brazing, and soldering are essential for applications ranging from large-scale structures to micro and nano devices, including microelectronics, marine applications, automobiles, aircraft, and medical devices,” he said.
Mr. Torii highlighted the importance of advanced methods in achieving unique joint properties while improving productivity, quality, and cost-efficiency.
Suresh Kulkarni, scientist, DRDO, spoke on ‘Explosive Reactive Armour — New Concepts and Possibilities for Effective Protection of Structures.’ He underscored the need for developing more effective counter-measures against rapidly advancing weaponry like shaped charges and high-velocity kinetic energy projectiles, to safeguard tanks, military vehicles, soldiers, and strategic infrastructure.
Kazuyuki Hokomoto, professor at the Institute of Industrial Nanomaterials, Kumamoto University, Japan, presented a session on the potential of explosion phenomena in materials processing. Drawing from decades of experience, he demonstrated innovative possibilities at the field.
The symposium featured 20 subject experts and saw the participation of 26 delegates from across the country and abroad.
Peter Fernandes, AIET principal, R. Tomoshige, head, research centre, Sojo University, Japan, Anand Kumar, joint director and head of BD & CB division, CPRI, Bengaluru, and Satyanarayana, head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, AIET, were present.
