2 NHAI officers among 5 arrested by CBI in bribery case, cash worth crores recovered

Five people, including two officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), have been arrested by the CBI in an alleged bribery case. The agency also recovered Rs 2.33 crore cash from the premises of representatives of the Gurugram-based firm.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested five people- two officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in Assam and three employees, including the Executive Director of a Gurugram-based private company in an alleged bribery case of Rs 4 lakh. The CBI arrested an Accounts and Junior Accounts officer of NHAI, both of regional office, Assam.
The central agency carried out searches at around 15 places in Guwahati, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Shillong, and Patna at the premises of the accused, which led to the recovery of incriminating materials. The officials recovered cash worth Rs 2.33 crores from the premises of the Executive Director of the private company. The CBI carried out a raid based on input about the exchange of bribes and arrested the accused.
The accused have been identified as Dipak Das (Accounts Officer) and Manoj Kumar (Junior Accounts Officer) of NHAI and they will be produced before a court in Guwahati. The employees of a private company have been identified as Sunil Kumar Agarwal (Executive Director), Pankaj and Dilip Rajput, employees of M/s GR Infraprojects Ltd in Gurugram.
The case relates to the allegations of extending favours to the company by the public servants for processing and clearance of bills, release of Bank Guarantees, etc. in lieu of illegal gratifications. It was further alleged that the company had executed a contract of road widening in Meghalaya in the year 2018 for which a discharge certificate was to be issued by NHAI after completion of four years of mandatory maintenance on March 31, 2022.
It was also alleged that the public servants and others had favoured the private company in processing and clearance of final bills and getting bank guarantees of the private company lying with NHAI. The public servants accepted bribes for releasing the discharge certificates issued by NHAI.
The CBI laid a trap and caught and caught the public servants accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from the employees of a private company. The employees of the private company were also caught.
